Sokoban: a guide for your next round

Choose a round of Sokoban and settle into its rules. Push every crate onto a target. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Try a more deliberate round

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Refer to the controls when needed.

Understand the aim

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The playing sequence

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Using the playing area

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A closer look at one example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Notice this detail

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Check the rule before repeating the action. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
